Fence Questions, Answered
Thinking about a new fence? Here are the questions we hear most from homeowners and businesses around Des Moines and Central Iowa. Don't see yours? Call 515-718-8838 and we'll talk it through.
Getting started
How much does a new fence cost?
Every fence is priced to the project. The biggest factors are total length, height, material, number of gates and the shape of your yard (slopes, trees, obstacles). Once we see the property, we give you a clear, itemized estimate with no surprises.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Call 515-718-8838 or use our Request an Estimate form. We can often give a ballpark over the phone, then come out to measure so the final number is accurate.
Do you offer financing?
Yes, financing is available on approved credit. We also accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, cash and check.
What areas do you serve?
Des Moines and Central Iowa, including West Des Moines, Ankeny, Altoona, Pleasant Hill, Waukee, Urbandale, Clive and surrounding communities.
Do you do commercial fencing?
Yes. We install fences for both residential and commercial properties, including chain link for storage yards and job sites and ornamental fencing for offices and retail.
Choosing a fence
Which fence material is best for me?
It depends on what you want the fence to do. Wood gives classic privacy and warmth. Vinyl offers privacy with almost no maintenance. Chain link is the most affordable way to contain pets and kids. Ornamental aluminum adds security and curb appeal without blocking your view.
What's the best fence for dogs?
For most dogs, a 5 or 6 foot privacy fence (wood or vinyl) or a chain link fence works well. Tell us about your dog's size and habits, like jumping or digging, and we'll recommend the right height and style.
What fence works around a pool?
Ornamental aluminum is a popular choice because it's durable, rust-resistant and keeps the view open. Pool barriers usually need specific heights and self-closing, self-latching gates, so we'll review the requirements with you.
How long will my fence last?
With proper installation, vinyl, aluminum and galvanized chain link can last decades with little upkeep. Wood fences last longest when they're sealed or stained every few years.
Permits, HOAs and property lines
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Many Central Iowa cities require a permit or have rules on fence height and placement.
Can you help with HOA approval?
Yes. Send us your HOA guidelines and we'll recommend a fence that meets the height, style and color rules, and give you the details you need for your application.
Do I need to know my property lines?
Yes, it's important. A fence should be installed on your property. If you're unsure where the line is, check your plat or survey before we start. We're happy to look it over with you.
Do you call in utility locates?
Every job starts with Iowa One Call (811) marking underground utility lines before we dig. It's free and keeps everyone safe.
Installation
How long does installation take?
Many residential fences are installed in a day or two once utilities are marked. Larger or more complex projects take longer, and we'll give you a timeline with your estimate.
Do I need to be home during installation?
Not necessarily. We'll confirm the layout and gate locations with you before work starts. Just make sure we have access to the yard and pets are inside.
Can you install a fence on a slope?
Yes. We'll either step the panels down the grade or rack the fence to follow the slope, depending on the material and the look you want.
Will my fence hold up to Iowa winters and wind?
That's what we build for. Posts are set below the frost line and we use materials made to handle wind, snow and freeze-thaw cycles.
Repairs and warranty
Do you repair fences you didn't install?
Yes. We repair broken boards and pickets, leaning posts, sagging gates and storm damage on most wood, vinyl, chain link and ornamental fences.
Do you offer a warranty?
